The Australian Museum (AM) is governed by a Trust established under the Australian Museum Trust Act 1975. Our 11 Trustees play a valuable role in monitoring the performance of the AM, assisting with strategic planning processes and acting as advocates for the institution. The South Australian Museum has been committed to making Australia’s natural and cultural heritage accessible, engaging and fun for over 150 years. It is a place where families can learn and grow together. Today the Museum is one of the most visited museums in Australia and holds collections of national and international significance. Megafauna are large animals that roamed the Earth during the Pleistocene, 2.5 million to 11,700 years ago. In Australia, megafauna included the huge wombat-shaped Diprotodon and giant goanna Megalania. European megafauna included Woolly Rhinoceroses, Mammoths, Cave Lions and Cave Bears. In North American, megafauna included Giant Ground Sloths ... The majority of fish are considered bony fish, it is a much more diverse group with over 28,000 species. Bony fish include the Mackerel tuna and Eastern Australian salmon. The Australian Museum Ichthyology Collection contains specimens of many of the species listed in the fact sheets.
